R.L Lewis is one of the most creative and versitile figures of a Florida Landscape Artist tradition that has become known as the Highwaymen. He is also a retired Art Teacher of 32 yearsin Brevard County. Inspired by Harold Newton and his brothers, Lewis picked up a gifted paint brush from Harold and never looked back.
Inducted into the Florida Artist Hall of Fame in 2004, Lewis' work hung at the Smithsonian as part of the exibition a Florida Original: RL Lewis and the Highwaymen Tradtion" in 2003-2004, and he recieved a National Endowment for the Arts grant (2003-2005) for his project Preserving the Highwaymen Tradition. He continues to live, work and paint Cocoa, Fl. Today, and is a frequent guest, lecturer, and teacher at schools and galleries throughout Florida.
